Electric Sheep |
http://electricsheep.org/ |
29944x |
One of the most interresting screen savers ever. A distributed computation of colourful and shapeful IFS fractals by many computers connected to the Internet, which is then merged into a smooth animation on the central server and send back to the "sleeping" computers.
Each running Electic Sheep is a network client, which computes frames of the animated IFS fractal in idle CPU cycles, then uploads the finished images in JPEG to the central server. Some abortive images are sorted out and the others are merged into a MPEG animation, which is then downloaded back by the clients and displayed on the screen.
This way a "collective dream" of many computers is created. Some of the more interresting dreams can be also downloaded in higher quality or bought as a poster or DVD.

Fractint |

If you like the fractal graphics and the math around, this piece of software might be the right one. Fractint is a Linux ported IBM fractal generator initially developed for DOS. It may seem a bit obsolete today. Actually, there are many modern programs available but most of them is a derivative work with GUI and other bells and whistles added, however probably none of them beats the "original" - its capabilities seems a bit limited.
