Mówiąc dokładniej nie jest to system czasu rzeczywistego jak np. VXworks czy QNX. Jest bazowane na jądrze Linux dostarczając możliwości pełnego wywłaszczenia. Linux cierpi z powodu braku wsparcia dla czasu rzeczywistego. Aby osiągnąc prawidłowe zachowania czasowe (przewidywalne opóźnienia) konieczne jest dokonanie zmian w źródłach jądra np w polityce obslugi i szeregowania przerwań. W ten sposób, można mieć platformę czasu rzeczywistego, z małymi opóźnieniami i wysoce przewidywalnymi wymaganiami, wraz z całym "normalnym" (nie real-time) środowiskiem Linuxowym (dostęp do TCP/IP, systemów wyświetlania i okienkowych, plików i baz danych, itd.) RTAI oferuje te same serwisy co rdzeń jądra Linux, dodając cechy przemysłowego systemu czasu rzeczywistego. | ||
