makeself is a small shell script that generates a self-extractible tar.gz archive from a directory. The resulting file appears as a shell script (many of those have a .run suffix), and can be launched as is. The archive will then uncompress itself to a temporary directory and an optional arbitrary command will be executed (for example an installation script). This is pretty similar to archives generated with WinZip Self-Extractor in the Windows world. Makeself archives also include checksums for integrity self-validation (CRC and/or MD5 checksums).

autopackage is a package manager for Linux that is intended to sort out RPM hell by making it much easier to create distribution-neutral packages that can be downloaded and run, a la InstallShield. It has several advantages over both the RPM approach and the Windows installer-stub system. Although the packages are "smart" and can adapt to the computer on which they are installing, there is minimal overhead involved on the package itself. Using autopackage, you can create .package files and link them to the autopackage network for easy installation using a distributed apt-style system. These packages also have many other powerful features not found in other systems.

SMATCH is a neat program designed to locate programming errors in any open source software project. Right now it is actively used to screen out errors inside the Linux kernel. There are two main parts to Smatch. The first is a patch to the gcc sources to screen out a lot of useful information. The second part is a collection of Perl scripts and libraries to analyze the information and report the findings.
